I have a hen which has been sitting on nests for about three weeks. Now you have to know she doesn’t sit on one nest, she moves around to where the eggs are. Now hold that thought.
Last night we lost power in town due to the storm. I was sitting at the bar eating my pizza and drinking a nice cold one with an old high school sports buddy I haven’t seen in ten years. Kristan the bar keep had lit candles and had a nice atmosphere going but I had to get the chickens locked up for the night so I finally said farewell.
As I got to the henhouse I realized the brooder with 6 tiny pullets in it would be cold and I started wondering how to keep them warm for the night. Taking them home might be the only answer but I would have to come up with a way to keep them warm there too.
As I start to box them up for the trip I look over at mother hen sitting on the nest and all I can tell myself is DUHHH.
She thought it awkward for a couple moments but then settled down and kept them alive till morning in the 38 degree weather. They are doing great and back in the brooder this fine spring morning.
Awwww they were kept warm in the most natural way. Glad you realized what to do. ♥
